Property Tax Appeals
by Dean Spina, Attorney
April 2011 -- Time to Appeal Property Assessments is NOW
April 15, 2011 through May 5, 2011 is the only time when you can appeal the assessed value for real property in 2011. This applies to industrial, commercial, residential and agricultural property.
An appeal in 2011 to the appropriate local Board of Review may be taken on one of several grounds, including that the property is assessed for more than market value.
In 2012, the ground for an appeal may be limited to proving a downward change in value.
An appeal to the appropriate Board of Review must be taken during the short window of time. Subsequent proceedings (e.g., appeal to the Iowa Property Assessment Appeal Board or district court) cannot be taken if there is no appeal to the local Board of Review.
Bradley & Riley is experienced in successfully handling appeals to the Board of Review, district court or the state appeal Board. In 2010 alone, Bradley & Riley represented the owners of eleven tax parcels and obtained reductions in assessed value in excess of $7.5 million from the local Board of Review.
